Ubiquiti Enterprise Security and Network Upgrade for a High-Security Storage Facility
Introduction
There are businesses whose operations require high security measures, where simple surveillance cameras are not enough. They need full visibility and control over everything that happens, timely alerts and responses, and complete information about every person and vehicle visiting the facility and surrounding area. They also require control over all entry points and a convenient management system.
In this project, the Ubiquiti Enterprise Solutions we proposed meet all of these requirements while providing additional automation and functionality.
Client Background and Challenges
The client, a private company operating a mid-sized warehouse with adjoining office spaces, required a comprehensive overhaul to meet stringent security standards. Spanning 12,000 square feet, the facility included indoor storage areas, office zones, and a large shared parking lot surrounding the building, accessible via a few entrances from the main road. As a logistics hub handling valuable inventory, the site demanded ironclad protection against unauthorized access, theft, and external threats.
Prior to our involvement, the warehouse relied on a handful of outdated cameras that offered limited coverage and no intelligent features. There was no integrated access control system, leaving doors and gates vulnerable to manual errors or breaches. WiFi coverage was inconsistent and weak, hampering operational efficiency in key areas like inventory management and employee communication. The expansive parking lot posed additional risks, with blind spots allowing potential intruders or solicitors to go undetected. Overall, the client faced challenges such as poor visibility around the perimeter, inadequate event tracking, and a lack of automation, which increased the risk of security incidents and reduced productivity. These challenges mirror those we've resolved in prior projects, such as integrating legacy systems in manufacturing facilities to prevent downtime.
These issues are common among warehouses and similar enterprise sites, where outdated infrastructure fails to keep pace with modern threats. Our goal was to deploy a Ubiquiti-based solution that not only resolved these pain points but also integrated seamlessly with existing systems, emphasizing reliability and cost-efficiency.
Our Solution
Drawing on our extensive experience as Ubiquiti installers, we designed a holistic enterprise network and security upgrade centered on Ubiquiti UniFi products. This deployment focused on high-security requirements, incorporating AI security cameras, access control, and robust WiFi to create a unified, scalable system.
Key Ubiquiti UniFi products implemented included:
- Network Core: UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max for centralized management and high-throughput routing.
- Switching: USW-Pro-Max-48-PoE (720W) to power and connect all devices efficiently via PoE.
- WiFi Access Points: 4 x U7 Pro Access Points for indoor coverage and 2 x U7 Outdoor Access Points for exterior reliability, all connected via 2.5 Gbps uplink ports for blazing-fast performance.
- Video Surveillance:
- 1 x Enterprise Network Video Recorder (ENVR) paired with 10 x Enterprise 3.5" HDD (24TB each) for extensive storage, ensuring two months of footage retention both locally and in the cloud.
- 7 x AI LPR Cameras (UVC-AI-LPR-B) for license plate recognition on all incoming and outgoing vehicles.
- 17 x AI Turret Cameras (UVC-AI-Turret-W) for detailed monitoring of entrances, offices and storage area.
- 4 x AI PTZ Industrial Cameras (UVC-AI-PTZ-B) with 22x zoom for dynamic perimeter patrol.
- 1 x Protect Viewport (UFP-VIEWPORT) for streamlined video monitoring.
All configurations adhered to Ubiquiti's best practices for enterprise security, as outlined in their official documentation.
- Access Control:
- 1 x Enterprise Access Hub (EAH-8) as the central controller.
- 2 x G3 Reader Pro (UA-G3-Pro-Black) for interior doors.
- 2 x G3 Intercom (UA-G3-Intercom) for exterior doors.
- Audio Alerts: 4 x AI Horns (UP-AI-Horn-Speaker-W) for real-time notifications and deterrence.
Integration was a cornerstone of our approach. We installed new and connected existing locks to the UniFi Access Hub, enabling app-based control for roll gates and doors. The AI-enhanced cameras were configured using UniFi Alarm Manager for coordinated responses: If an AI Turret or LPR camera detected motion or an event, the PTZ cameras would automatically pan, tilt, and zoom to the area, tracking subjects across the parking lot, even if they moved from one side of the building to another. This setup ensured full exterior coverage, with LPR cameras guaranteeing license plate capture for every vehicle.
Unique aspects included AI-powered analytics for reducing false alarms, such as detecting soliciting within 10 feet of the perimeter and triggering AI Horns for audio alerts. This AI integration, powered by Ubiquiti's AI, was customized based on site-specific data from our initial survey. We also implemented VLANs for network segmentation, failover redundancy for uninterrupted operation, and zero-touch provisioning for easy scalability. This Ubiquiti deployment for a high-security environment not only bolstered protection but also automated routine tasks, minimizing human intervention and enhancing overall efficiency.
Implementation Process
Every YesTechie project follows a structured, client-centric methodology to ensure smooth execution and minimal disruption. For this warehouse upgrade, the process unfolded over several key phases:
- Site Survey and Planning: We began with an in-depth on-site assessment, evaluating the building's layout, existing infrastructure (including outdated cameras and locks), and the surrounding parking lot. This included mapping blind spots and discussing the client's high-security needs. We explained Ubiquiti's latest technologies, such as AI security cameras and access control integration, to align expectations. Our team (Certified UniFi Integrators), used advanced tools like spectrum analyzers to map WiFi interference.
- Design and Coordination: Based on the survey, we developed a detailed project blueprint, incorporating equipment placement for optimal coverage. For instance, PTZ cameras were positioned on walls for panoramic views, LPR cameras were positioned to cover all entrances and driveways throughout the parking area, and AI Turrets at all entrances to the building and key areas inside the building. We overlaid camera coverage zones on a satellite photo of the building to visualize the setup. The design was reviewed and approved by the client to ensure it met their requirements.
- Installation and Configuration: Over five days, our certified technicians handled infrastructure cabling, hardware mounting, and system setup. Indoor U7 Pro Access Points were installed in high-traffic areas for stable WiFi, while outdoor units covered the perimeter. Access control devices were wired to existing locks, and the ENVR was configured with redundant storage. AI features were fine-tuned via the UniFi dashboard, including patrol routes for PTZ cameras and event-triggered alerts.
- Testing and Training: Post-installation, we conducted rigorous testing to verify coverage, response times, and integration. This included simulating intrusions to confirm AI detections and PTZ tracking. Finally, we provided hands-on training for staff, demonstrating the UniFi app for access management, video review, and alert handling.
This efficient deployment process minimized downtime to under 2 hours total, as verified by client feedback, allowing the warehouse to maintain operations throughout the deployment.
